From vintage Willys to classic Wagoneers, every Jeep tells a story, and we’re thrilled to bring one of those stories to life with our 2025 event build: a beautifully restored 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, officially named the MBJJ Surf Crawler.

This iconic full-size Jeep is more than a build; it’s a symbol of Jeep’s diversity and heritage. By blending its vintage charm with modern upgrades, the Surf Crawler will serve as a rolling ambassador for the Myrtle Beach Jeep Jam, showcasing what makes Jeep culture so special while bringing something fresh and exciting to the event. The build captures the laid-back vibe of the coast with subtle nods to beach life and the excitement of early morning drives during the Sunrise Beach Crawl.

Why a 1989 Grand Wagoneer?

The Grand Wagoneer is a classic in every sense of the word. Known for its blend of rugged utility and upscale comfort, it helped define the modern SUV while staying true to Jeep’s adventurous roots. This particular Wagoneer came to us in outstanding condition, with a restored body and an AMC 360 V8 engine ready for upgrades. Its four-door design and unmistakable style make it the perfect choice for a Jeep Jam build that celebrates Jeep history while inspiring future adventures.

For our 2025 event, the Wagoneer will debut as the Surf Crawler, featuring a retro-styled wrap designed by Native Sons that highlights the vehicle’s classic lines while incorporating Myrtle Beach Jeep Jam colors. A roof rack mounted surfboard will add a signature touch, reflecting the relaxed, adventure-driven spirit of the Jeep community without going overboard on theme elements.

What’s in Store for the Build?

Our plans for the Surf Crawler will focus on enhancing performance, capability, and style to make it a standout at events while ensuring it will be suitable for everyday driving:

• Performance & Reliability: The Surf Crawler will be transformed into a dependable daily driver. Planned upgrades will include a fuel injection system, high-output alternator, upgraded cooling fan, new ignition components, and a modern distributor to ensure it will comfortably cruise to regional events and handle everyday driving needs.
• Capability: While the Surf Crawler will not be designed for extreme off-roading, it will be built to handle sandy beach conditions with confidence. A lift kit and larger tires are planned to improve ground clearance and traction, making it ideal for driving through the sand and showcasing at Myrtle Beach Jeep Jam.
• Style: The Surf Crawler’s design will embrace relaxed beach vibes with a retro-styled wrap created by Native Sons, incorporating Myrtle Beach Jeep Jam colors. The vintage-inspired graphics will highlight the Wagoneer’s timeless lines while adding a fresh, coastal flair. The mounted surfboard on the factory roof rack will enhance the vehicle’s beach-themed aesthetic while staying true to its classic roots.
• Interior : The Surf Crawler’s interior will receive upgrades designed to improve comfort and functionality while preserving its vintage appeal. Planned enhancements include refreshed seating, protective floor mats, and an upgraded audio system that will sound great while cruising the Grand Strand or crawling the beach at sunrise.
